David Grapes Appointed Producing Artistic Director of LTR

David Grapes HeadshotThe University of Northern Colorado is proud to announce that David Grapes has been selected to serve as the new Producing Artistic Director for University of Northern Colorado’s 82 year-old professional summer stock theatre, The Little Theatre of the Rockies. Professor Grapes will replace Tom McNally, who retired as Artistic Director at the end of the 2015 summer season.

Professor Grapes joined the UNC faculty in 2004, when he was hired to be the Founding Director of the College’s newly established School of Theatre Arts and Dance. For the past 11 years he has also served as the Executive Producer and Resident Director for LTR.

During that time he produced 75 productions, re-invigorated the AEA guest artist program, established the Norton repertory, secured company housing, produced a number of regional premieres including the world premiere of two new musicals and directed the productions of Aida, Vanya Sonia, Masha and Spike, God of Carnage, Private Lives, Escanaba in da Moonlight, The 39 Steps, Master Class, Nixon’s Nixon, One More For My Baby, Tintypes, The Lady with All the Answers, The Tafettas, Hay Fever, Doubt, Quilters, God’s Man in Texas, Bad Dates, The Drawer Boy, Babes in Hollywood, Tuesday’s With Morrie, Rounding Third and Bleacher Bums.

 An award-winning director, actor and playwright, Professor Grapes has provided administrative, financial, and artistic leadership for a wide variety of theatrical institutions including two professional regional theatres, 3D productions – a commercial bus and truck touring company, two nationally recognized university theatre departments, a variety of summer stock companies, and a number of large professional not-for-profit regional and civic theatres. Prior to his arrival at UNC, he served for six years as the Producing Artistic Director of Tennessee Repertory Theatre (LORT C). While in Nashville, he produced 36 productions including three world premieres, established an “off- Broadway season” of contemporary plays, expanded the Rep’s education/outreach department, and was the recipient of eight “Tennie Awards” for Best Direction by the Nashville Tennessean.

Professor Grapes is a member of SDC, AEA and the DGA. As a professional director he has staged over two hundred and thirty plays and musicals at professional LORT theatres, theme parks, summer stock companies, dinner theatres and educational institutions across the country. He is the co-creator of 6 musical revues and author of a number of original scripts that have been produced at more than 500 theatres worldwide. David Grapes holds an MFA Degree in Acting/Directing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

This summer Professor Grapes will direct the productions of Outside Mullingar in the Norton Repertory and The Addams Family Musical in Langworthy Theatre.
